Horizons-what's new, what's changed
Our New Database--
Our new database is awesome.
It enables coaches to easily communicate with us and to see
at a glance a list of AHUC clients with whom they have
worked (starting in 2006). It enables us to track the
coaching process—to know whether the coaching has begun,
whether it is continuing, and when it ends. In order to do
this, coaches are asked to visit the program page for their
clients and to regularly update them concerning the progress
of coaching. The process is fast and easy and the database
very user friendly.
Invitation For
Coaches--
We have removed the names and
bios of our volunteer coaches from our website. In its
place, we will be putting an alphabetical list of all of our
volunteer coaches who request to be listed. Your name will
only be included IF YOU REQUEST that we include you. The
list will be in alphabetical order by last name. We will
include your email address next to your name if you wish.
Our goal is to recognize you
as a volunteer coach and to thank you. While this can be an
opportunity to attract others to you, some of our coaches do
not want their contact information provided to others. For
this reason we ask that you notify us if you wish to be
included in this list and if you wish to have your email
address included.
Please email
pam@ahuc.org if you wish to have your name listed and
whether/what email address you want listed next to your
name.
Plans for
2006--
We are spending the last
quarter of 2005 planning and preparing for 2006. The Board
of AHUC has reaffirmed our original mission and vision.
Our vision is for every woman
to know she is valuable, loved, and capable of achieving
anything she is willing to work toward in her life. Our
mission is to coach women who are moving from unfavorable
living environments to gain greater self-confidence,
independence, and economic status.
In 2006 we
hope to extend our reach to more women by establishing more
affiliate partnerships with other nonprofit organizations.
To see a list of the affiliate partners with which we have
worked, visit our website at
www.ahuc.org. If you know of any organizations whose
mission would match well with that of AHUC and which could
benefit from our coaching and life skills training programs,
please email
michelle@ahuc.org.

Kellogg
Foundation Coaching & Philanthropy Project—
This year A
Hand UP Coaching participated in a Coaching
& Philanthropy Project along with two other
nonprofit organizations. This project was
funded by the Kellogg Foundation. We
completed this project and submitted our
report on September 30. The results of this
project reminded us that AHUC is serving an
important and valuable purpose and that our
volunteer coaches deserve kudos for the
wonderful work they have done. Thank
you to all coaches who participated in this
project—your work is reflected in these
results.
The general
conclusion from this project revealed
substantial and positive changes with regard
to the clients achieving higher employment
goals and improved self confidence.
Here are some
highlights from this project.
-
The number
of working participants increased from
83.3% at the start of the project to
91.75% at the conclusion.
-
The
average monthly earnings increased by
$201 and the average hourly wage
increased from $11.32 to $12.92.
-
All groups
increased the average number of hours
they worked per week.
-
All groups
indicated they felt better about
themselves at the end of the project
than they did at the beginning.
-
All groups
showed significant improvement in
feeling that the direction their lives
were headed would lead to better things,
in feeling good about themselves, and in
being happy with their lives.
For more
results, please visit our website and read
our final report in its totality.

Margaret Briem
comes to coaching with extensive experience
and training in behavior modification,
social work, counseling, and mediation.
Below are excerpts from a letter sent to us
by a Dress for Success client who was
coached by Margaret.
I have been
a member of the Professional Women’s
Group/Dress for Success program in
Vancouver, British Columbia for 13 months
now. In my third or fourth month, I was
fortunate enough to have been selected for
the Professional Coaching program which
gifted me with phone coaching sessions. I
am writing to recognize the coach I have
been working with for exemplary, supportive
and compassionate coaching.
Margaret Briem,
whose heart, patience and understanding is
huge, has not only helped me clarify my
values and live in accordance with them in
my career, relationship, spiritual and self
choices, but also gave the support I needed
to embrace the courage of change. . . .
If there is
one thread to the time I’ve spent with
Margaret, it is learning to take good care
of myself and live a life of commitment
towards myself and my values. An author and
a public speaker, I believe she is a great
resource for Dress for Success as she is a
true mentor for women in learning to take
better care of themselves.
I am now in
school in a nutrition program that I love. I
have continued to fine tune and grow and
evolve within my life, career choices and my
relationships, using my values as a
barometer. I have gained invaluable insights
and resources. My life is on the way to
becoming a life I love and I, a person I
love and respect!
Thank you, Margaret, for your
generosity, your compassion, and your
kindness from all of us at A Hand UP
Coaching. Your work is making the world a
better place by inspiring others to step up
and out to share their wonderful
talents and abilities!

"Dreams Do Come True"
We have a
dream. It is to make the world a better place.
Each of us—you, me, and millions of others—can
bring this dream to life. By coaching women who
are moving from unfavorable living environments
to gain greater self-confidence, independence,
and economic status, A Hand UP Coaching along
with an awesome cadre of volunteer coaches is
bringing this dream to reality.
Sophia
Torjusen was one of our clients. Here is what
she said about her coaching experience.
“By working with my coach, I have a healthier
opinion of myself, and my capabilities. I
finished uncompleted projects. I have raised my
standard on both a personal and professional
level.”
Sophia’s
comments mirror the experiences of hundreds of
other clients. Through greater self awareness
women are empowered to approach life and career
challenges with winning strategies, gaining
personal strength, self-esteem, life balance,
and career success in the process. This
empowerment creates opportunity and
encouragement for our clients to contribute in
countless ways to their families and their
communities. Now that’s powerful!
We need
your help. Our goal is to serve 250 women in
2006 and to deliver our 4 Stepping Stones
workshops to many others. If you know of anyone
who is contemplating making charitable
donations, we hope you will share what you know
about A Hand UP Coaching with them and encourage
them to visit our website at
www.ahuc.org.
Join us in
the magic of making dreams come true. Spread
the word about AHUC and encourage others to
donate. AHUC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization and donations are tax deductible.
Donations may be sent to: A Hand UP Coaching,
